چکیده

Ultrafast optical excitation with intense mid-infrared and terahertz pulses has emerged as a new tool to control materials dynamically. As most experiments are performed femtosecond pulse excitation, typical lifetimes of light-induced phenomena in solids only few picoseconds. Yet, many scientific applications require longer drive lifetimes. Here, we describe pump - terahertz-probe setup based on CO$\mathrm{_2}$ laser seeded 10.6 $\mathrm{\mu}$m wavelength from an parametric amplifier, itself pumped by Ti:Al$\mathrm{_2}$O$\mathrm{_3}$ laser. The output the produces high power nanosecond duration, which synchronized Hence, these can be tuned duration slicing their front back edges semiconductor-plasma mirrors irradiated replicas seed pulses. Variable lengths 5 ps 1.3 ns achieved, used pump, probe generated electro-optically sampled

Broadly tunable terahertz generation in mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers.

Room temperature, broadly tunable, electrically pumped semiconductor sources in the terahertz spectral range, similar in operation simplicity to diode lasers, are highly desired for applications. An emerging technology in this area are sources based on intracavity difference-frequency generation in dual-wavelength mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers. Here we report terahertz quantum cascade las...

Mid-Infrared Laser Applications in Spectroscopy

The vast majority of gaseous chemical substances exhibit fundamental vibrational absorption bands in the mid-infrared spectral region (≈ 2–25μm), and the absorption of light by these fundamental bands provides a nearly universal means for their detection. A main feature of optical techniques is the non-intrusive in situ detection capability for trace gases. The focus time period of this chapter...

Optical Pump-Terahertz Probe Spectroscopy of Condensed Phase Reaction Dynamics

The general theoretical and experimental principles of optical pump-THz probe spectroscopy of chemical reactions in liquids is presented. Background on specific difficulties encountered in the experimental observation is reviewed. Chiefly, signal-to-noise ratios currently limit the quality of information that can be extracted from optical pump-THz probe data on chemical reactions. This issue is...

Picosecond pump and probe spectroscopy utilizing freely propagating terahertz radiation.

We demonstrate the feasibility of scaling up a terahertz-pulse generation scheme for use with a 10-Hz amplified femtosecond laser system. Visible pulsed excitation combined with a far-infrared probe should prove to be a powerful picosecond time-resolved technique.
